A novel nitrogen source, brewed up by the distilling industry
A byproduct of the distilling industry, distillers grains are not widely used as fertilizer. But these grains, mostly corn, still have strong nutritional value left for soil microbes, helping promote long-term soil health and fertility. The moderate price, combined with good nitrogen level and touch of phosphorus make distillers grains a great fertilizer value.

For new container plants, mix in 2 Tablespoons of distillers grains per gallon of soil at the time of planting.
For new in-ground plantings, mix ½ cup distillers grains per 5 gallons of soil. For established container plants and in-ground plants, apply ½ cup per foot of plant height every 30 days throughout the growing season. Work gently into the top one inch of soil to ensure contact with soil microbes.
For row plantings, broadcast ½ cup distillers grains per 10 square feet of planting area. Feed monthly during the growing season with 2 to 3 cups per 10 square feet, working lightly into the surface soil.
